QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
1. Canadian Firearms RegulationsWe will supply the forms with our last mailing but for current firearms regulations call: 1-800-731-4000 or visit their website: www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca.
Note: Handguns are strictly prohibited.
2. Entering Canada
Proof of citizenship is required. Acceptable proof includes a valid passport, or a baptismal certificate or voter registration card.
3. Firepower needed
To hunt caribou a minimum .243 calibres is needed. For black power Gun 50 calibre minimum is needed.
For Bow 40 lbs with 7/8 or 1 inch blade is needed.
4. Crossbow
The use of the crossbow is prohibited for hunting purposes in zones 17, 22, 23 and 24.
5. Cancellation policies
If the Hunter must cancel Prior to June 1st of the year of the scheduled trip the Hunter may:
a) Apply his deposit to the following year with no escalation in the portion of the package (the airfare portion between Montreal and Schefferville and also the taxes and Hunting licences will be subject to the direct cost price adjustment.)
b) Substitute with another date available within the same hunting season without additional charge. After June 1st there is no provision for a refund of monies paid. But a Hunter may substitute another in his place up to the day of departure without additional charge.
6. Moving policies
Yes if we have to. Dealing with migration is unpredictable. For that reason we have set camp East - North and West of Schefferville on the Caribou migration route and we book 1 camp out of 3 camps therefore the decision will be made to which camp you will be assigned when you will get to Schefferville base camp. We have our private floatplane to make any move we have to do to assure you a successful Hunt.
7. Float plane
We do our own floatplane services.
8. Best week for hunting
There is no best week; it is always good somewhere and the name of the game are to be put at the right place to start with. But keep in mind the caribou shed their velvet by mid- September if you're looking for hard rack.
9. Fishing season
The regular fishing season for brook trout, lake trout and pike closes September 7th. After September 7th it will be catch and release with single and barbless hook.
10. Hunting Bear and small game
August 25th is the opening of Black bear and small game hunting season. The cost for the licence is approximated at $90.00 us for bear and approximated $50.00 us for small game. After we decide to which camp you will be hunting we will be able to recommend or not you purchase these licences.
11. How physical is the hunt
Your guide will take you by boat as close as possible to your hunting point, you may have to walk a short distance and elevation is not a problem. But being in good physical shape will make your hunt more enjoyable. It is not a rough Hunt unless you want it to be.
12. Minimum age to hunt
To obtain a non-resident's hunting licence, a person must be a non-resident and be at least 12 years of age.
13. Blaze orange vest mandatory
All hunters, guides and individuals accompanying a hunter must wear a fluorescent, orange-coloured safety vest, at least 400 square inches in size, covering the back, shoulders and chest. Hunters must make sure that the safety vest is visible at all times.
14. The weather
The weather like the migration is unpredictable. You could have all 4 seasons the same day. Dress yourself in layers and carry a day pack with rain gear. You can expect a lot of rain and wind with temperature range in August 60 degree daytime to 40 degree at night and in September can expect from 45 to 50 degree day time from 30 to 35 degree at night.
15. Hunting with bow and rifle together
We make every effort so that Bow hunters and rifle hunters are in different camp but cannot always happen. There is a lot of area to hunt separately out of each other and you probably would not hear a shot. Most of our Hunters bring both a Bow and a rifle.
16. Meat transportation and preservation
All camps are equipped with solid screen meat house. Cheese cloth is supplied to assure the meat stays cool and bug free. The guides will field dress and pack your meat in special plastic containers. We have a refrigeration chamber in Schefferville and in Montreal for the storage of your meat and dry ice is available for small cost in Montreal.
17. The guides chores
Their primary task is to keep the camp in top shape as well as all the equipment. Security is their major concern and to keep communications with the main base. When we hire them we make sure they understand their role that every one of our guest deserves proper attention. They will set you up on the major trails, back packing, butchering and capping your animal. They've been told to do everything they can to make your trip a dream of a lifetime.
18. Tips for the guides and cook
Tips for guides and cook are entirely at your discretion. Our staff really appreciates what they get.
19. Emergency
All camps are equipped with communication system with base camp. Also we have first aid kits, smoke detectors on every sites, safety jackets in all boats. We also have strobe lights and we recommend that you bring walkie-talkie (we have some to lend at base).
